Nutritionist
My sweet aunt knows how much I’ve been having trouble lately with my…umm… stomach….uh… issues.  So anyway she made me an appointment with a nutritionist for monday, and she is paying for it!  What a fabulous aunt I have!  Anyway I am excited to talk to the nutritionist and see what she has to say.  I also think in the next few weeks I am going to be tested for food...

I'm so bland
The past couple of weeks have been rough.  I have been having some stomach problems.  I pretty much always have them, but some days are worse than others.  I was eating what they call a “bland diet” to try to get my stomach back under control. A bland diet consists of, well, bland foods, but to be more specific, white breads, mashed potatoes, pasta, saltine crackers, broth, fruits...

Lifestyle vs. Dieting
I’ve been thinking a lot about the Alton Brown quote that Sara posted below. Dieting, I feel, is kind of a dead end. It’s a temporary measure for what are usually temporary results, right? To change your body permanently you have to change your behavior permanently. That’s not so easy. Sara and I have really been concentrating on lifestyle change for about four weeks now. ...

Alton Brown: Live and Let Diet
Sara and I have been pretty lucky so far - as we’ve attempted to get healthy, nearly all of our friends are also exercising and eating better - so we have a lot of support. We also got some support in a place we didn’t suspect - Alton Brown. Anybody who knows me, knows I love The Food Network - especially Alton Brown. Oddly enough it seems that at the same time Sara and I are...

Wow I AM out of shape!
This morning Patch and I decided it was a good idea to start sprinting.  I have never been a runner and now I remember why.  Bob told us in addition to the 15 min a week of strength training that he had been also doing a couple days of cardio.  But instead of an hour on the “hamster wheel” he was doing 20-30 min of alternating sprinting and then walking to full recovery.  So I...

Taste test
So my battle with Mountain Dew continues. I only drink the stuff with meals these days. I really like the way it taste with food, it seems. I can drink water all day, but when it comes to meals, I need a little something more. So, in an attempt to find a possible replacement for the sugary swill, Sara and I held a little taste test tonight with a variety of “healthier” beverage...

Soundtrack
Tomorrow starts Sara’s and my strength training, but today I decided to get in a little cardio at the gym. I did 30 minutes on the elliptical machine. As I ran… no… ellipted? Yes, as I ellipted I listened to Jay-Z’s new (well, new to me…) album, The Blueprint III. It was the perfect soundtrack to work out to. I like all kinds of music, but there’s not a lot...

Guilty pleasure
Sara was having dinner with a friend tonight so I decided to indulge myself in what should probably be defined, going forward, as a guilty pleasure - and one that Sara doesn’t enjoy that much. A hamburger. I’ve done pretty well with meals so far: chicken, fish, soup, eggs. The only weak point has been the Mountain Dews, which, as those of you who have eaten lunch with me have been...

Garbage in...
Man, I love junk food. I don’t eat it all day or anything - as a matter of fact, I generally cook and eat fairly healthily. But, dammit, once a day I want a Little Debbie Swiss Roll, and God help anybody who says I shouldn’t have one! Sorry, I haven’t had any junk food today and I’m a little cranky. I really like chocolate. And I really, really like a nice cold...

What about Bob?
Leading up to my wedding a year and a half ago, I was a member of Promatx gym and trained with one of the owners Frank Crabtree.  Frank is an AMAZING trainer!!  He knows his stuff and is so much fun to work with!!! He helped me get in the best shape I’ve ever been in (until I let it go to hell). I love Promatx and never would have left if I hadn’t moved all the way across town. But I...

Not getting any younger...
I kind of rebel against making New Year Resolutions and the like. I’m not sure where it comes from; somewhere unhealthy and vain I’m sure. But new years bring reflection, and reflection -for most of us- pulls up a big score card. My score card says it’s time to start taking better care of myself. I turn 37 in a couple of months. I’m not hung up on that. Getting older...

Starting point
Well, I’ve tipped the scales today at a whopping…. wouldn’t you like to know!  Haha. Patch and I have decided to start this blog to chart our progress as we both go on the journey to getting healthy over the next year.  Hopefully blogging about our process will also motivate us to stick with it. We want to use this blog as a sounding board for all of our progress, our goals and...
